The Hurt Locker USA, 2008 ☆☆☆

The war in Irak has inspired many filmmakers, and this one tells us the daily life of a bomb squad whose mission is to disactivate bombs everyday. Any day can be the last day for these soldiers. You could not have a more stressful job, if you ask me. The movie also shows us how cultural differences prevent us from cooperating and understanding each other as well as we wished.

Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire US, 2009 ☆☆☆☆

The tragic story of Precious, a 16 year-old who struggles through life with one child and another soon to be born. Left along by her parents, she finds guidance in a social worker and a teacher who make her realize that it is going to take much more to move forward. The dream sequences are amazing, the acting superbe also.

The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus UK, 2009 ☆☆☆

Terry Gilliam brings to the big screen another fantasy story about Dr. Parnassus and his dream world. As is typical of Gilliam, nothing is at it seems, there are midgets and giants, big movie stars and an epic story to be told.

The White Ribbon Das Weisse Band, Austria-Germany, 2009 ☆☆☆☆

A small village in pre war Germany is witness to horrible crimes. Who is responsibler? The moral rules and Protestant society back in those years made people lead a pretty harsh life. We get to see who the criminals are, and the answer is as disturbing as a typical Michael Haneke film.

A Single Man USA, 2009 ☆☆☆☆

The life of a lonely professor whose companion dies in a car accident is poetically told by director Tom Ford. Expect a master piece score by the same composers of the theme song of In the Mood for Love.

Capricorn One USA, 1978 ☆☆☆

A NASA mission to Mars will not work, and the whole program is endangered. What to do? Let's fake the Mars landing. That is exactly what happens, but it has terrible consequences for the government when the astronauts decide to run away and tell the truth to everyone. Good entertainment.

An Education UK, 2009 ☆☆☆☆

Set in the 60's, a 16-year old meets at 40-year old. That is basically the plot. However, the way her parents allow her to slowly get involved in this relationship despite their strict education is very interesting. It does not end good for her, but she does get what she wants. Just when you thought you had seen all the Lolita-related movies, this one stands out for its originality.
A Perfect Getaway USA, 2009 ☆☆☆

Two couples on vacations in Hawaii discover that there has been a brutal murder a couple of days before their arrival. They are exploring the most unexplored corners of one of the islands and both couples grow suspicious of one another. Expect many plot twists and a very entertaining film overall.

Solaris Солярис, USSR, 1972 ☆☆☆☆☆

Science fiction in Soviet movies is normally pretty boring. No special effects whatsoever and long shots that seem to last forever, that was not exactly exciting stuff to watch. However, this movie has left me in awe. Again, there are barely any special effects, but the philosophical and psychological themes explored in this story are very interesting. Solaris is a far-away planet and astronauts have been sent to explore it. However, a strange phenomenon is occurring; the ocean of Solaris seems to have a mind of its own. Not only that, but it can read the astronaut's conscious mind and create hallucinatory images that only these astronauts can see. Not only is the plot interesting, but the cinematography and the use of colors, combining some scenes black and white and others in color, give this movie a very unique visual style. This comes as no surprise, since this is a movie by Andrei Tarkovsky. This is definitely the best Soviet movie I have seen.

American Splendor USA, 2003 ☆

A failed cartoonist marries an equally depressing woman and decide to live together in Cleveland, Ohio. His short moments of fame are quickly overcast by the cartoonist's depressing black humor and general disregard towards anyone else. This is supposed to be a comedy, but I barely smiled at certain scenes. More boring than funny.

Gran Torino USA, 2009 ☆☆☆☆

24 December 2009

The Proposal USA, 2009 ☆☆

A State of Mind UK, 2004 ☆☆☆☆
